Two Rave Reviews for Our Incredible Vin Doux Naturels

Two excellent articles have appeared in the press recently regarding the remarkable Vin Doux Naturels (VDN) from Philippe Geyral that we are proud to represent and distribute in the UK.

We currently stock over 60 different vintages of these brilliant fortified sweet wines from the youngest, 1989, to the oldest, 1874. Consequently, it’s more than likely that we stock your birth year and, for those born in years that were stinkers in Bordeaux or Burgundy, VDN offers a unique chance to try a multi-dimensional, authentic and fascinating sweet wine from your vintage that will be truly delicious and will keep in the door of your fridge for several weeks if you fancy going back for a sip now again.

Unlike most of our other offers which are for whole cases, we can sell these ancient wines by the bottle as well as by the case, providing at least three bottles are purchased in total.

In a fascinating recent piece from Neal Martin for Vinous entitled 'Rescuing Memories', he concludes that, “no other category of wine offers such a combination of deliciousness, complexity, history and affordability. Treat yourself...while you still can”. There are some hugely impressive scores in the mid 90’s for many of these wines. Subscribers to Vinous can view the article here

Likewise, Richard Hemming MW states in his article entitled 'Raiders of the Lost Rivesaltes' on Jancis Robinson's website, that “while my scores vary, any of them can be bought and enjoyed without prejudice”. There are wines in this report that receive scores of 18.5, 19 and even 19.5 out of 20! These are massive ratings that normally apply to famous super-stars of the wine world such as Petrus, DRC and Lafite. Subscribers to Jancis Robinson's website can view the article here.

Below you will find a selection of 10 of the highest rated Vin Doux Naturels from these two recent articles and from an earlier article in The Wine Advocate. All are scored at least 94/100 or 18.5/20.

1955 Rivesaltes – Marquis de Boaca

Rivesaltes, Marquis de Boaca 1955720 GBP

"The 1955 Marquis de Boaca, which here comes from one of the three demi-muids, offers impressive intensity on the nose with marmalade, licorice and star anise that is very well-defined. The palate is ripe and sensual on the entry, caressing the mouth with lovely red plum, strawberry, toffee and fig toward the finish. This is composed and harmonious, tender but intense. Drink now-2025."

1958 Rivesaltes – Villargeil

Rivesaltes, Villargeil 1958780 GBP

“Philippe Gayral purchased the single foudre of 1958 Rivesaltes from Château Villargeil in 2009. It has a very harmonious and pure bouquet with scents of orange rind, quince, Earl Grey and a touch of dry tobacco, exuding great clarity. Vivid! The palate is very well defined with quince and marmalade on the entry. There is no sense of heaviness here, but there is a heartwarming, sensual and viscous texture that seduces the senses, with just the right amount of spice enlivening the finish. This is superb. Drink 2017-2035."

1959 Maury – L’Archiviste

Maury, L'Archiviste/Domaines et Terroirs du Sud 19591,200 GBP

“This 1959 Maury may ultimately turn out to be Philippe Gayral's greatest find. It comes from the oldest parcels of Grenache Noir and Carignan and spent 40 years in wooden foudres. It has a lucid amber hue. The bouquet is utterly sublime: red plum, Hoisin, mulberry, burnt toffee, stewed Clementines and just a hint of VA giving it life. Wonderful! The palate is beautifully balanced with disarming fine, almost filigree tannins. Stewed red fruit, fig jam, tayberry, Moroccan spices and quince suffuse this Maury that has outstanding length and delineation. The 300 bottles produced are due to be released later this year. Make sure you reserve one. Tasted at Farr Vintners. 2018 – 2038."

1960 Rivesaltes – Riveyrac

Rivesaltes, Riveyrac 19601,020 GBP

“Incredible piquant spices – mace, pepper, chilli powder. Long, dense, intense – not just complex, but complicated and challenging. Rancio, honey, black tea. A snapshot of a different world."

1965 Rivesaltes – La Cuvée des Aigles

Rivesaltes, La Cuvée des Aigles 1965780 GBP

“The 1965 La Cuvée des Aigles, a blend of white, grey and black Grenache, has a sense of energy on the nose that is captivating. You get the mandarin, marmalade and quince scents mingling with Moroccan spice, sandalwood and sage. The palate is well-balanced with a citrus-fresh entry, beautifully balanced with perfectly judged acidity, marmalade, quince and ginger entwined harmoniously on the finish. This is an outstanding Rivesaltes from Philippe Gayral - a blessing for anyone that was born it what was otherwise a wretched vintages almost everywhere else. Drink: 2016 – 2030."

1968 Rivesaltes – Sobilane

Rivesaltes, Domaine de Sobilane 1968600 GBP

"The 1968 Rivesaltes has a more powerful bouquet than the 1969: dried honey, marmalade, fig, hints of marzipan and Chinese 5-spice. Like the 1969 this is very well defined. The palate is beautifully balanced with a viscous texture. There are enticing notes of marmalade, nougat, cafe latte, clove, white pepper and fennel with a long and sustained finish that is a pure unadulterated joy. Superb. Tasted with Philippe Gayral. 2018 – 2032”

1969 Rivesaltes – Riveyrac

Rivesaltes, Riveyrac 1969840 GBP

“Engine oil, treacle, prune. It has all the knowledge and compression of fossil fuel. Tastes neat, like it should be diluted before consumption, almost."

19 points, Richard Hemming MW, October 2018

1970 Rivesaltes – Riveyrac

Rivesaltes, Riveyrac 1970480 GBP

"Chocolate, granite, floral, incredible depth and layering on the finish. Such incredible density! A powerful and infinite palate."

18.5 points, Richard Hemming MW, October 2018

1973 Rivesaltes – L’Archiviste

Rivesaltes, L'Archiviste 1973420 GBP

“Sweet vanilla cream on the nose. Superbly broad spice character, tea leaf and dried fruits. A force of nature, and balanced so naturally between sugar and acid. Long, concentrated finish."

19 points, Richard Hemming MW, October 2018
