Miraval Rosé - A Taste of Provençal Royalty

Victoria Moore, the Telegraph's wine correspondent, wrote some very nice words in her article about Farr Vintners and three of our rosés - in fact, our only three rosés!

The first she mentioned was the "dreamy" Domaine Ott - a wine that has become something of a cult and is sadly hard to get in any meaningful volume. The second was our best-selling Puech Haut Rosé - a wine that many of you will be all-too-familiar with already. This wine is not from France's fashionable Provence region but, as Victoria points out, "as the quality obsessives at Farr have shown, you can find good (inexpensive) pale rosé outside Provence."

Today is about demonstrating that you can find good, inexpensive pale rosé from within Provence too! Why all the fuss around Provençal rosé? Victoria describes it perfectly: "it has a complexity, a finesse and a subtle savoury quality, like sandalwood, that you simply can’t find elsewhere." Château Miraval does actually prove that the hype around this famous region can indeed be justified. Whilst good wine had always been made here, it only really shot to global prominence when it was bought by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in the mid-naughties.

From a vinous perspective, what was more significant about that purchase was that all things viticultural became the responsibility of the Perrin family of Rhône behemoth, Château de Beaucastel. Huge investment followed and the quality of the wine moved upwards sharply. Today Miraval represents all that is good about both Provence and rosé and, at just £15.60 per bottle including taxes, it is far better value than many of its neighbours.

A glinting, bright and pale pink colour in the glass, the nose is vibrant, with delicate white strawberry and heady rose petals. This fresh and floral character continues on the palate, which is dry, cool and refreshing with crisp acidity washing over crunchy red and white fruits. The balance and harmony, with precision of fruit character is very moreish, with the slightest savoury edge adding a subtle interest without detracting from the joy of fruit. Once again a leading light of Provençal rosé.

16.5 points, Farr Vintners
