Two Triumphant Tuscans

Sometimes, certain wines defy the difficult conditions within which they are made. When that happens, it is a fairly clear sign that something special has been achieved and often this merits closer attention. The wines being offered today are two such examples. They are small production, seriously impressive wines made in a tricky vintage. Such is the remarkable achievement of Fattoria La Massa in 2014 that Antonio Galloni has said that these are “stellar current releases, which are some of the very best wines I have tasted from La Massa. As always, the wines are rich and sumptuous, but they also have gained in finesse over the last handful of years.”

The first wine is a cuvée named Carla 6 and is 100% Sangiovese. Just 250 cases were made and Galloni believes this 2014 to be “the best vintage of the Carla 6 yet“. In awarding it 94 points, he describes it as “super-expressive, bright and nuanced to its core, it possesses remarkable harmony and persistence”. This is a delightful expression of Sangiovese.

The second wine may be more familiar to many of you as we have had great success in the past with the 2000 vintage. La Massa’s 2014 Giorgio Primo is “a vivid, powerful wine that exudes class”. Only 580 cases were made of this Bordeaux blend, which boasts the mercurial input of Bordeaux consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. Galloni surmises by saying “in 2014, Giorgio Primo is a knockout. That's all there is to it”. This is a Super Tuscan without the all-too-common huge price.

These wines have just been released by the estate and will be physically available for delivery after the summer. Both wines would benefit from some cellaring, but Carla 6 is the wine to drink whilst you wait for the Giorgio Primo to age gracefully.

Both wines are £270 per 6 bottles in bond but, for a limited time only, if you buy 6 bottles of each wine, you’ll pay £500 in bond (£250 per 6) instead of £540. To take advantage of this offer, please click here.

Minimum Order – 12 bottles
These wines are both available for delivery after the summer

“The 2014 Carla 6, La Massa's 100% Sangiovese, is fabulous. Super-expressive, bright and nuanced to its core, it possesses remarkable harmony and persistence. The dark red cherry, plum, mint and licorice flavors are beautifully delineated, and attractive floral notes gradually open up to add lift. This is the best vintage of the Carla 6 yet.”

“La Massa and proprietor Giampaolo Motta move from strength to strength with the 2014 Giorgio Primo, a vivid, powerful wine that exudes class. Dark red plum, lavender and spice are all given extra energy by the supporting tannins. Hints of graphite, smoke, herbs and crushed rocks infuse the chiseled, mineral-driven finish. In 2014, Giorgio Primo is a knockout. That's all there is to it.”
