Burgundy 2016

You will probably have already heard many stories about how Mother Nature contrived to make 2016 a write-off in Burgundy. Thankfully, despite her best efforts, 2016 has produced some brilliant wines of both colours. The apocalyptical nature of the early press surrounding the vintage was due to extreme frost and mildew which decimated many parts of the region. As a result, yields were considerably down in places. However there is a core of excellent, albeit scarce, wines for you to add to your cellar. John Gilman, in his View From The Cellar publication sums the vintage up perfectly, “The 2016 vintage in Burgundy will long be remembered for the devastating frosts that struck so many top vineyards…But, at some point in the future, the superb quality of the wines will take precedence over the frost in the minds of most Burgundy lovers and 2016 will be remembered more for the excellence of the vintage.”

The Whites

Jasper Morris MW describes the best whites as “…fine-boned, elegant wines with subtle detail and a fine quality of fruit, good persistence, accessible early and likely to be best in the medium term.” Many frost-hit producers made so little of their top whites that they blended what they did make into their lesser cuvées. This was especially true in Chassagne and Puligny.

From Faiveley we have the fantastic Mercurey Clos Rochette Blanc at just £140 per case. This is a really good price for a wine that has “impressive intensity and freshness with depth and length”, according to Julia Harding MW. From Jadot we have three excellent Meursaults, including the much-demanded Meursault Perrières. Alongside these we have Jadot’s PulignysReferts and Folatières. Puligny was particularly badly hit by frost but what was saved and bottled was fabulous. Finally, at the top of the Jadot tree come Corton Charlemagne and the extremely rare Chevalier Demoiselles.

The Reds

Jasper comments, “I can certainly say that I found tasting the 2016 reds extremely exciting”. Whilst he says that there is no clear comparison with any other recent vintage, he does note that there are some similarities with 2010, but more with the difficulties and the uptick in reputation than with the wine styles. Jasper continues, “there is one clear hallmark to the vintage, the refreshing finish which seems to characterise so many wines.“ Jancis Robinson MW’s view of the reds is “2016 has produced already-charming but potentially long-lived reds with a winning combination of bright, fresh, burgundian, expressive fruit with good but not insistent acidity.”

For the reds, Faiveley’s Mercurey Framboisière is a fruit-forward wine that will drink well as soon as it arrives. Jadot’s Beaune Cras is, according to Decanter’s William Kelley, superb this year… the wine shows superb focus, structured around fine-grained tannins and a bright line of succulent acidity.” It is good value at £400. Arguably one of the most exciting vineyards in Burgundy, Gevrey Clos St Jacques does not disappoint in 2016. Neal Martin says that it “…wants to show the other premier crus who is boss.” In the Grand Crus, Chapelle Chambertin is always a wine that catches the eye but especially in 2016. Neal describes it as “good, if not better than, the 2015”.

Summary

Overall, 2016 is a vintage that will provide a huge amount of pleasure. The whites, whilst not being particularly built for the long-term, have elegance and charm with the best coming from Puligny, Chassagne and Meursault. The reds may not be easily comparable with other years but they have an energy and freshness that can only be found in the very best vintages in Burgundy.
