2009 Rioja Gran Reserva 904, La Rioja Alta - “The latest in a superb run”

The new vintage of one of our favourite Riojas has just been released.

Made almost entirely from 60 year-old vine Tempranillo, La Rioja Alta’s Gran Reserva 904 is a stunning wine. This cuvée is released only in vintages that the Bodega deem exceptional and the amount of care and attention that has gone into the winemaking is mind-boggling. Although this vintage is yet to be tasted and scored by many critics, the vintage is a very strong one and Rioja Alta believe that it may be their finest 904 since 2001.

The only critic to taste this wine so far is Tim Atkin MW and he gave it an impressive 96 points, commenting “Reflecting the excellence of the vintage, as well as its power, this is the latest in a superb run of 904 Gran Reservas…supremely drinkable on release, but will reward further cellaring…Traditional Rioja with a modern accent.”

Having tasted the wine ourselves, we too are excited. This is a really impressive 904, thanks in no small part to 2009 being such a superb vintage. Owing to a near perfect ripening season, this particular release is marked by an elegance and voluptuousness that carries the wine through to a long finish. It is soft, sleek and pure without compromising on fruit concentration or power. The palate combines refined red and black cherries and bramble fruits with notes of sweet spice and leather, all gently framed by ripe and silky tannins. To top it off, the finish is finely balanced and goes on for minutes.

This really is an excellent wine at an extremely reasonable price.

“Reflecting the excellence of the vintage, as well as its power, this is the latest in a superb run of 904 Gran Reservas. Combining Tempranillo with 10% Graciano for added backbone and grip, it’s a wine that is (as ever) supremely drinkable on release, but will reward further cellaring. Spicy, aromatic and enticing, with the vanilla sweetness of American oak, savoury tannins and a core of stylish, balsamic-edged fruit. Traditional Rioja with a modern accent.”

96 points, Tim Atkin MW

"A deep garnet colour in the glass, this exudes black cherry, exotic nutmeg, aniseed and earthy leather on a complex, spicy nose. The palate is smooth and silky, the fine tannins integrated into the fruit, allowing it to shine through with black cherry, damson and blackberry. Fresh acidity lifts the mid-palate, bringing with it layer upon layer of savoury spices. The leathery development from extended barrel ageing builds to the long finish, making this a very moreish wine that is ready to drink on release. This lies in perfect harmony with the vibrancy and power of fruit, shining through to show the ageing potential ahead.”
