A “Sensational” 96 Pointer for World’s Lowest Price of £160
The 2015 Closerie du Pic from Château Puech-Haut is an exciting proposition. Whilst the Pic St Loup area may not be known to everyone, it may well be one of France’s most underrated communes. Lying some 20 miles north of Montpellier, it forms part of the Côteaux du Languedoc and it produces many very impressive wines that tend to be so popular domestically that they never leave France. One of the best exponents of the region is Château Puech-Haut, a firm Farr Vintners favourite thanks to their brilliant Rosé and their Prestige Rouge (one of our biggest ever sellers).
The 2015 La Closerie du Pic is a 60/40 blend of Grenache and Syrah. It is one of the most serious and impressive wines that we have tasted from the estate. It has power and concentration but at no point does it feel overworked, thanks to a solid backbone of acidity and freshness that carries the copious amount of dark fruit through to a very long finish.
Jeb Dunnuck, when at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, gave this wine a huge 96 points and called it “…one of the gems in this terrific vintage”. Previously he had stated of Puech-Haut that “…their top cuvees [are] able to stand toe to toe with the greatest wines in the world.” Whilst this claim may be a little excitable, there is no doubt that few wines offer the quality vs. price payoff that this does.
This is a delicious wine that, whilst drinking very well now, will keep for up to another 5 years (at least).

“Just bottled three weeks ago, the 2015 Pic Saint Loup La Closerie Du Pic is certainly one of the gems in this terrific vintage. Its vibrant purple color is followed by sensational notes of black raspberries, toasted spice, cassis and even a hint of bacon fat. With medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless texture, integrated acidity and a blockbuster finish, drink this straight up fabulous Pic Saint Loup anytime over the coming 7-8 years. Hats off to the team at Puech-Haut, and consultant Philippe Cambie, for this sensational wine!”
“Easy to mistake for a Northern Rhône, the 2015 Closerie du Pic is unadulterated enjoyment in a bottle. The nose offers copious ripe bramble fruits, plums, coffee and an undercurrent of black pepper. The palate is plush and ripe without any hint of being overworked. Black olive, plum fruits and spice are the key characteristics of this juicy, approachable Pic St Loup. Impossible not to have a second glass.”
