The World’s Greatest Value Red Bordeaux – In Stock Now!

When it comes to value for money in Bordeaux, we genuinely believe that it is quite impossible to beat the brilliant Lalande de Pomerol wines of genius winemaker Denis Durantou. His flagship Château L’Eglise Clinet is one of the superstars of the right bank that regularly matches, or even outperforms, the likes of Petrus, Le Pin and Lafleur in blind tastings. But, only a kilometre down the road, he makes two gorgeous wines that are sold at a tiny fraction of the price of his famous Pomerol – La Chenade and Les Cruzelles.

The forward and plump La Chenade from the very good 2014 vintage has just arrived in stock and we are pleased to now be able to offer it at a remarkably low £120 per dozen bottles in bond. It is also available in magnums, double magnums and imperiales. This is a wine that is scored in the 90’s by the critics and the 2014 has recently been rated 92 points by James Suckling. To put this into context, that’s the same score as Petit Cheval 2014 – a wine that will cost you £1500 per case.  If you can find a better Bordeaux wine at £10 per bottle we’d love to know what it is!

From the older vines comes La Chenade’s big brother Les Cruzelles. This is a fabulous right bank Bordeaux that regularly beats famous name Pomerols and Saint Emilions in blind tastings. The 2014 is the latest in a great run of vintages here. Even the 2011 and 2013 were outstanding but this is a better vintage that we are pleased to be able to offer at a lower price. A real favourite at Farr Vintners and we would be confident that you could serve this blind to your friends and they would guess that it was worth at least twice its ludicrously modest price of £150 per dozen.

Plum, chocolate and cassis-bush aromas follow through to a full body, integrated tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Drink in 2020, but already a joy to taste.

The 2014 La Chenade, a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, has a straightforward but appealing bouquet with ample dark cherries, bergamot tea and a touch of dried flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with a tightly-knit structure. I appreciate the depth here, the focus and finesse, a wine that threatened to blossom in bottle... and it has. Given the market prices for this Lalande-de-Pomerol, Denis Durantou's 2014 comes highly recommended. Drink Date 2018-2028

The blueberry, chocolate and walnut aromas are compelling. Medium to full body, ripe and silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Better in 2020 but already a joy to taste and even drink.

The 2014 Les Cruzelles is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc picked between 24-29 September. It has a little more ripeness on the nose compared to the La Chenade, very perfumed with subtle violet and iris aromas, later a hint of orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin with ample blackberry and bilberry; grainy in texture with a pleasurable marine/oyster shell element lending personality on the finish. This is very fine.
