Top class Chablis from the great 2015 vintage from just £10 per bottle in bond!

With the sun poking through the clouds now and again, it seems like a good time to look at one of the world’s great white wine regions. Despite the worldwide fame and reputation of Chablis, it still offers fantastic value for money, especially when compared with the Côtes de Beaune – where a Premier Cru at under £15 per bottle is very much a thing of the past.

We have three wines on offer today from the highly rated 2015 vintage at very modest prices – especially when you consider that 2016 will see prices rise dramatically as the region was hit by damaging hailstorms and production levels halved – not to mention the recent damage to the value of the Pound.

First up is Verget’s Chablis Cuvée de la Butte 2015 at just £10 per bottle excluding taxes. This may be the last time that we will ever have a Chablis at such a low price. This classic, flinty white was made from grapes grown just outside the Premier Cru “Les Butteaux” vineyard and matured in stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness and vibrancy of the wine.

The second wine is the impressive Premier Cru Mont de Milieu 2015. This has been highly rated by the critics and has all the classic zesty minerality of Chablis with an impressive density. This weight is kept in check by the notable refreshing acidity which comes from the earlier-than-usual harvest and the lower yields of the vines. A bargain at £165 per 12 bottles in bond.

Finally, for those who like their Chablis with a little more weight and density we have the more opulent Premier Cru 2015 Vaillons Vieilles Vignes – “Cuvée Minots”. This low production wine was made from a small parcel located on the lower hillsides of the 1er Cru "Les Vaillons". The vines here are over 50 years old and yields in 2015 were just 25 hl/ha. The free run juice was vinified in old barrels and then matured in concrete tanks on the lees for a further 7 months before bottling. Despite being the most expensive wine of the three, (£180 per 12 bottles in bond), this is still considerably cheaper than some of the bigger names in the region and, to our mind, just as good if not better!

These three wines from Maison Verget are closed with Stelvin screwcaps which ensure that they are free of cork taint.

"Discreet nose with a light toastiness and apple compote. The palate is boldly fruity, compact and firm, a robust style with good minerality on the finish. This has real typicity. Drink 2017 to 2024.”

90 points, William Kelley,

“Mineral and flint, white flowers the nose is fresh and fragrant the start of the palate is precise. There is mid sweetness hints of tropical fruits but at the back the mineral flint streak gives freshness the finish has length and persistence. Drink 2017 to 2022.”

92 points, Derek Smedley MW

“This wine has an expressive flinty, struck-match nose with hints of lemon zest. The palate is fresh, clean and mineral with lemon fruit and green apple. Zesty acidity lifts the finish and leaves a cleansing citrus length.”

16.5 points, Farr Vintners
