1985 Fonseca - ex Oporto Cellars

We have just sourced a parcel of 1985 Fonseca, shipped directly from their cellars in Oporto this year.  Now in bottle for just under 35 years it is right in the middle of its plateau of maturity and is drinking exceptionally well (though will easily keep for another couple of decades).  We tasted the wine in late November and it is lovely: distinctly "Fonseca" in style and a pleasure even at 10 in the morning.

Fonseca has long been at the pinnacle of vintage port production, perhaps rivalled only by sister property Taylor over the past 40 years - these are the equivalent of the first growths of Vintage Port.

Packed in 6 bottle wooden cases, our stock landed with us in December and is available for immediate delivery.  It will make impeccable drinking this winter and for many more to come. Moreover, at £320 per 6 bottles in bond, this is an awful lot of fine wine for the money.

The 1985 Fonseca is still youthful in appearance with hardly any ageing on the rim. The nose offers kirsch, sloes and Christmas cake. With time, there are subtle notes of dried fig and dates beginning to emerge and add to the complexity. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced on the supple, rounded entry. It is not quite as complex as the aromatics, with dates and dried fig, the finish mellow and refined. It is very elegant for a Fonseca, weighty but supremely well focused. This is a fabulous Fonseca that is ready to drink now, but will age for another 30 or 40 years. Drink now-2030+.

Mature looking, garnet coloured. An intense, opulent, smoky, warm and alluring bouquet. A chorus of aromas including sultanas, raisins, brown sugar, liquorice, tar, figgy pudding, Cuban tobacco, cinnamon and cloves. Thick, smooth, rounded and plush on the palate – almost chocolatey in texture. Beautifully mature, with classic Fonseca power, spice, richness and warmth. With no tannic edges remaining this port wine is absolutely in its prime and quite delicious. A long, warm, sweet and enduring finish.

A hard, take-no-prisoners Port, extremely powerful and still closed when last tasted. Deep inky color, with concentrated blackberry and raisin aromas, full-bodied, with massive raisin flavors, a superb backbone and a very long finish.

The 1985 vintage was preceded by an exceptionally cold, wet winter, with night temperatures well below freezing in early January. Berry set was excellent and the young bunches perfectly formed. The summer was hot throughout the region, with no rainfall during July and August. Fonseca picked earlier than most other shippers and the harvest was brought in under ideal conditions before the rain which fell later in the month of September. Conditions were ideal for fermentation resulting in must of exceptional colour and weight. Bottled in 1987.
Round, rich and firm. Liquorice and freshness. Drink 2015-2030.
