2013 Rioja Crianza Cubillo, Lopez de Heredia

Bodegas López de Heredia is one of Spain’s icons, and a true treasure of a winery.  Founded in 1877, and still in family hands, time seems to have passed the winery by.  We were delighted to taste their most recent releases in the office a fortnight ago, and immediately purchased pretty much all that we could.

The bodega is a rarity in Rioja in that it produces wine only from its own vineyards, of which there are 4:  Tondonia, Bosconia, Cubillo and Gravonia.  Cubillo, situated at an altitude of more than 450 metres, on a mixture of clay and limestone, produces wine that could easily be marketed as Gran Riserva, though the bodega continues to offer them as Crianza, despite the quality of fruit and the lengthy ageing process.

Crianza Cubillo is not only an unusually complex wine for the price, it is only released when ready to drink, in this case at 8 years old, which makes the pricing even more special.  We can offer this wine of considerable character at £135 per dozen bottles in bond (£194.14 per dozen inc. taxes, ex. delivery).
Not only is this an absolutely fantastic wine for the money, it is extraordinary value for a fully mature Rioja (though one which will keep) of this heritage and quality.

There is a touch of tobacco on the nose with hints of vanilla, rosewater and spice. In the mouth there is dark fruit, some smoky meatiness and, above all, a freshness and an authenticity that beguiles. This is classic, old-school Rioja, and a wine that is complete in every sense. A touch of salinity on the finish completes the picture. A wine of rare character. Delicious, and outstanding value.
