A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by juicy black cherry and black currant fruit notes, a velvety texture and a supple-styled Margaux that consumers will enjoy. It is not a big, powerful, concentrated wine, but it is well-balanced and cleanly as well as correctly executed. This is a stylish, sensual Margaux to drink over the next 10-12 years.
The 2011 Giscours is tighter on the nose that its peers and demanded more coaxing, blackberry and melted tar, graphite and hints of blood orange. Good complexity. The palate is taut and fresh, well defined with crisp, edgy tannins, graphite and tobacco towards the finish that has a Pauillac-like character. This is drinking well, better than two or three years ago, and should give a decade’s worth of drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting. 2022 - 2030
A wine with blackberry and cocoa character. Full body, integrated tannins and a long, flavorful finish. The reserved fruit and beautiful structure are all there from the vintage. Better in 2017.
Serious improvements are taking place here (and also at sister property du Tertre) under the Dutch manager, Alexander Van Beek. Those who remember the 1970 Giscours will know that this Chateau has the ability to make really great wine. Black fruit on the nose and impressive power and density on the palate with glycerol and an attractive array of sweet ripe cassis fruit. Combines power and richness with a silky structure.
Red fruits are backed by black fruits layers of flavour. The freshness of red cherry is underpinned by sweeter richer cassis but the tannins are all rather obvious and tend to hold back full fruit expression.
Fine blackcurrant Cabernet fruit, good structure and aromas that flow through to the palate, an elegantly expressive wine. Drink 2015-2025.
The powerful, concentrated 2011 Giscours is not terribly dissimilar from their 2005. Composed of two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot, it exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with scents of charcoal, underbrush, forest floor, licorice, black currants and a hint of wood smoke. This rich, medium to full-bodied, dense effort should be consumed over the next 10-15 years.
Tasted at the Château Giscours vertical, the 2011 Château Giscours is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, picked between September 8 and October 1. It offers more fruit intensity than the 2012 and I find more Margaux florality here. It would benefit from more delineation, but there is decent delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin on the entry, red cherry and raspberry fruit intermingling with cedar and tobacco notes. It feels a little conservative on the finish and needs more finesse, but it is a commendable contribution to the vintage. Drink 2017-2030.
The Giscours 2011 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The nose is fleshy and ripe with lifted strawberry and raspberry aromas, the oak present but well integrated. It has a pleasing purity for the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, sensual mouthfeel. I feels just a tad worked in the winery, but I still appreciate the balance and soft silky tannins towards the finish. Very fine. Tasted April 2012.
This is very precise and pure with very fine tannins and a lovely currant and light citrus undertone. Balanced and very pretty. Long finish.
