This Saint Estephe Chateau makes wines that are true to the appellation with impressive depth and concentration. Always modestly priced en primeur. The 51 hectare vineyard is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Recent vintages have impressed us here.
The 2016 Meyney has a very deep color. The bouquet is a stunner, delivering intense, mineral-rich black fruit pixelated to the nth degree. This is extremely focused and conveys the energy of a tightly coiled spring. The extremely well-balanced palate offers fine-grained tannins and superb acidity. Very pure and focused, with a harmonious, vibrant finish that lingers in the mouth. You can feel this lingering 45–60 seconds after the wine has exited. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. 2026 - 2050
Wild nose. Impressive, deep hue and a wealth of fresh, violet-like aromas, as well as cassis, graphite and dark cherries. The palate has a very sleek, fine, powerful core of tannins that bring a lot of depth and deliver rich dark-fruit flavor. A classic Meyney. Best since 1961! Try from 2023.
The 2016 Meyney is deep garnet in color. It needs a little coaxing to bring out the lovely blackberry pie, sassafras, and violets scents, followed by cassis and chocolate mint. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is generous and plush, with just enough freshness and a fragrant finish.
Right next door to Montrose, this is another 2016 to look out for, and one that shows the brilliance of St Estèphe. Dark fruits abound, and the wine is full of natural power and exuberance, with fresh acidities. Still young, clearly a good 15 years ahead of it, but can be drunk now. Harvest September 23 to October 14, with an expanded team of 90 pickers in 2016 that allowed for more precision. Hubert de Boüard consultant.
Tasted blind. Very dark crimson. Intense Indian ink on the nose. Give me my calligraphy pen! Rich and round. Very glamorous. So much effort has gone into every drop of this …. VGV
Drink 2026 – 2050
Deep purple in colour. Dense and brooding on the nose, still very youthful and tight. With air this starts to unfurl just a little, revealing cedar, pure blackcurrant and dark cherry, with just a hint of exotic spice and mocha. The palate is concentrated, with initially compact fruit expanding through the mid-palate. The tannins are chalky, full and chewy, a classic St Estèphe. Despite this, there is refinement. Savoury, dark fruits push through the structure in tandem with incense and nutmeg. This is very youthful and built for the future, but it is remarkable to think that this wine is Meyney and not something more grandiose. Must be one of the value picks of the vintage. Give it another 6-8 years in bottle, then drink over the following 15+ years.
Average score from the Southwold Group: 17.12
The fruit on the nose is fresh the palate firm black cherry and cassis underpinned by tight tannins. It does fill out towards the back sweeter fruit but tannic firmness tends to dominate and hold back the fruit on the finish. 2025-38
The 2016 Meyney has a very deep color. The bouquet is similar to the bottle poured blind at the Southwold tasting, laden with those mineral-rich black fruits. The palate is focused and poised, framed by very fine tannins and delivering a complex and involving finish that is absolutely top-notch. This gives the big names of the appellation a run for their money. What a fantastic Meyney! A young Saint-Estèphe with a spring in its step. Tasted at a vertical at Château Meyney. 2023 - 2045
The 2016 Meyney has quite an opulent and flamboyant bouquet, which is something I do not expect from this Saint Estèphe. It seems to calm down in the glass and attains more delineation and poise. The palate is sweet on the entry with impressive precision, quite linear in style with blackberry, graphite and smoky notes, leading to a finish that offers satisfying persistence. Excellent.
Drink Date 2021 - 2040
Solid and incredible depth reminds me of the Meyney of the 1960s that were so structured and incredible. Full body yet polished and refined. Super structure.
Winemaker Anne la Naour and consultant Hubert de Bouard are clearly working very hard on upping the quality of Meyney, which is just starting to push beyond its normal price category. Of the triumvirate of great vintages, for me the 2014 was incredible and punched above its weight, but this is also a very good wine. It's a terroir of clay and gravel that takes a long time to come round, but already we have freshness, colour and spice with big bristling tannins and well placed damson and black cherry fruits. Powerful upfront with a good round mouthfeel, this has depth and solidity, a serious wine. 49% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Petit Verdot.
Drinking Window 2024 - 2040
Very deep crimson. Sweet and perfumed. Very luscious with a hint of camembert! Much riper and lusher than the average St-Estèphe. Very dry end. Only on the end does the appellation impose itself.
