This 7 hectare vineyard on the limestone hillside of Saint Emilion adjoins Ausone and has the same owner and winemaker. The Vauthier family have owned it since 1921. Around 2,500 cases are produced annually from vines that average around 35 years old.
The 2022 is 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and will spent 18 months in oak barrels
Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries, violets and creamy new oak, the 2022 Moulin St Georges is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with powdery tannins and a taut, chalky profile. It should flesh out further with additional élevage.
The 2022 Moulin Saint-Georges was picked 19 to 26 September and is aged for 18 months in French oak. Black cherries and bilberry fruit, oyster shell and light cedar scents on the nose, it just needs to knit together during its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lightly spiced on the entry, then quite linear with a dash of black pepper on its quite graphite-tinged, linear finish. Needs a bit more éclat.
A terrific effort in 2022, the Moulin St Georges should offer brilliant value for money. Deep ruby in colour, the nose is immediate and expansive, offering luscious cherry, blackcurrant and plum fruit together with just a hint of sweet smoke. The palate is vibrant in fruit, with great energy despite its plush, Merlot-led succulence. Seductive toasted spices intertwine with the fruit, fleshing out to give a round, seamless mouthfeel. An absolute joy to taste now, it should be impressive right out of the gates but have the capacity to age, too. Excellent.
Fresh and framed with a juiciness but also a coolness and brightness. Medium to full body. Very balanced. Well done. Lower pH at 3.52. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc.
A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Moulin Saint-Georges has a deep garnet-purple color. It bursts with bombastic scents of juicy black plums, blueberry pie, and warm cassis, leading to touches of cedar chest, menthol, and lavender. Big, rich, and full-bodied in the mouth, the palate is completely coated with black and blue fruits, supported by firm, velvety tannins, finishing long and decadent. It will need some time to come round, but promises to be a blockbuster!
A luxurious feel, with velvety tannins, enjoyable ripe black fruits, gourmet touches of smoked vanilla root and liqourice, all well drawn out through the palate, and providing plenty of estate signature. A well balanced luscious wien with a saline limestone twist. 3.55ph, 100% new oak. 28hl/h yield, smaller than across the rest of the Ausone range because of 50 year old vines planted almost entirely by Alain Vauthier when he arrived 1970. Harvest September 19 to 26.
80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample.
Dense and concentrated but fresh at the same time. A lick of vanilla oak on the nose and palate but not excessive and should integrate. Finely honed tannins. (JL) 14.5%
