This 1.6 hectare vineyard is owned by the family of the late Catherine Péré-Vergé (of Château Le Gay) although 0.3 hectares are not currently in production. Only a few hundred cases of luxurious Pomerol are made here annually. The property is situated in between Le Pin and Trotanoy, and planted with 100% Merlot from 50 year old vines. The fruit is de-stemmed by hand by 50 people with micro-vinification and elevage in 100% new oak.
Offering up aromas of cherries, cassis and plums mingled with notions of licorice, spices and creamy new oak, the 2021 La Violette is a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered wine built around a fleshy core of fruit and powdery, liberally extracted tannins. Like its stablemate Le Gay, it's vinified entirely in new barrels.
As always, 100% Merlot, 100% new French oak, 100% integral vinification and 100% destemmed by hand. Vivid purple colour. Hyper floral and fragrant tones on the nose, thanks to the choice of vinifcation. The palate is chock full of chocolate, vanilla and baking spices. Creamy blueberry fruit comes together with silky, rich tannins that resemble cocoa powder in texture. This is a fleshy example of the vintage that says as much about the work done at La Violette as it does the weather conditions. Bright acidity and cool black fruit linger with spice on the finish.
Sweet berry and spice with some pie-crust character. Medium body, firm tannins and a fresh finish.
The 2021 La Violette is deep garnet-purple colored. It has a fragrant nose of kirsch, black cherry preserves, and blueberry compote, plus suggestions of potpourri, tilled soil, and Ceylon tea. The medium-bodied palate has a quiet intensity of red and blue fruits with soft, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and perfumed.
2025-2038
Captures the graphite edge of the best Pomerols this year, with clear quality to the cassis, redcurrant and black cherry fruit, totally delicious and overshoots the vintage, with raspy but chewy tannins, a little austere but softened by black chocolate and liquorice bud. Vignobles Péré-Vergé.
