Chambertin, Domaine Rossignol-Trapet 2016

Tasting Notes

The 2016 Chambertin Grand Cru was impacted severely by the frost. Usually, the domaine produces around 22 or 23 barrels whereas this year...just four. Two of those are new barrels including two-thirds whole bunch fruit. Although it was affected by the frost, it successfully retains a wonderful, expressive bouquet laden with mineral-rich red berry fruit notwithstanding a captivating floral component that becomes more vociferous with aeration (like the Chapelle-Chambertin). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and focused with dark berry fruit, sea salt (maybe brine?), brown spices and a detailed, quite long spicy aftertaste. It is a worthy follow-up to the 2015...just a shame there is relatively little compared to other vintages.
