The 2020 Main Road & Dignity has a well-defined bouquet, nicely focused with mainly black fruit, loam, and cedar, with touches of mint. Very fine focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Perhaps there is a little more nervosité than the 2019, more citrus-drive, fresh with cedar and tobacco-infused black fruit towards the finish. Maybe more forward and expressive than the previous vintage, this will be very seductive from the outset. Drink 2025-2038.
Named after the two blocks that supply its raw material, Main Road & Dignity is a very rare example of a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon from the Hemel-en-Aarde region. Picked late in a cool site, it has cassis, bay leaf, fresh herb and damson flavours, grippy tannins, appealing zip and freshness and the concentration to age. Drink 2025-32.
Blackberries and bramble fruit, glossy blackcurrant and damsons with an umami, oystershell note bringing freshness. The palate is lifted and defined and very distinctive - more dark fruit interwoven with bracken, heather, walnuts and thyme and a dark chocolate mocha note. The structure is under-stated: sleek, with nimble fine-grained tannins and a defined, fresh finish.
Matured for some 22 months in 225-litre barrels, 20% new. Cassis, incense, violets, tea leaf and oystershell on the nose – very little herbal character, good or bad… Medium bodied and yet not short of fruit weight and structure while the tannins are fine, the finish properly dry. Alc: 13.8%.
