The 2021 Benje comes from a very warm and dry year in Santiago del Teide when the vines got blocked and suffered. They did a softer vinification, with shorter macerations and cooler temperatures, and they also bottled it a little earlier. The wine is a bit more reductive with a slight touch of rusticity. 25,000 bottles and 300 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2022.
The Benje Tinto bottling from Envínate is composed from a cépages of ninety percent Listán Prieto, nine percent Listán Blanco and one percent Tintilla. The vines range in age from seventy to one hundred and twenty years of age! The wine is fermented with native yeasts, primarily in cement vats and the racked into two-thirds used Burgundy casks and one-third into concrete tanks for eight months of élevage prior to bottling without fining or filtration. The 2021 Benje needs a bit of decanting time to unwind when first opened, but blossoms to deliver a superb bouquet of bitter cherry, complex botanicals, tree bark, dark soil tones, bonfire and a bit of chicory in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, complex and full-bodied, with lovely depth
at the core, outstanding transparency and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, tangy and savory finish. This is a fine bottle that should be given at least a few years in the cellar to further soften up its tannins underneath the lovely fruit. 2028-2055+.
