The 1930 Rivesaltes from Sisqueille is the oldest vintage unless you go right back to the 1874 that I tasted a couple of years ago. The 1930 was bottled in 2011. It has more richness on the nose than I was expecting, with bay leaf, clove, quince and a touch of rosewater, beautifully defined if not quite as profound as the 1941. The palate is viscous on the entry with fine acidity, a tang of marmalade and quince, cloves and Chinese five-spice, although I think with age it has lost a little persistence on the finish. Still, this is very fine. Drink 2017-2030.
A well developed tawny Port-like colour. The nose reminds us of a Sercial but it's much sweeter than expected on the palate with the nuttiness giving way to Bual-like richness. A wonderful blend of sweet old fruit which is balanced by an orange-zest-like acidity. Persists for a long time. Very much alive despite its 80 years of age. Quite remarkable really. A real privilege to drink a wine of this age that still has so much vivacity.
Tawny and lively. Fresh and dried fruit peel. Very vibrant and fun. Really racy and good.
